Carol Rowley

Long-standing Benyon Estate resident Carol Rowley, 82, reflects with fondness on the great community spirit in De Beauvoir in a lively conversation with Estate Manager Edward Benyon.

Carol’s chat with Edward was filmed as part of a project to record some of the changes that have taken place in the East London community over many decades, told through the memoires of its residents.

Carol’s story began in 1962 when she moved with husband George from her parent’s home in Stoke Newington to 89 De Beauvoir Road. Although divorced after seven years, she raised a family as a tenant of the Benyon Estate and has lived in three different homes there.

After De Beauvoir Road she took up residence at 49 Culford Road – now called Lawford Road. She later made one further move to 109 Hertford Road, where she still lives independently with her dog, Treacle, and a talkative macaw.
