Dark Heart Candles sells vegan soy candles, hand-poured right here in De Beauvoir Town.
Benyon Estate tenant Mona Fetzer launched Dark Heart in the second national lockdown in November 2020 and, over the past seven months, the business has continued to grow.
Mona decided to try out candle making as a hobby during the lockdown and soon found herself creating more and more as gifts for family and friends.
Mona explained: “I wanted to create alternative, ‘dark art’ inspired candles, something different to the usual floral or simple designs you so often see.”
Her kitchen table hobby quickly grew into business that she runs alongside her full-time job as a receptionist. Every candle is hand-poured by Mona, created in small batches with a range of scents.
“Each candle is made by me from my kitchen table. I’ve designed and sourced the labels and jars myself and built the website too,” Mona explained. “I have learnt so much as I have gone along, and I am really enjoying the process of growing the business. I’m very much inspired by seeing how other small businesses borne out of a lockdown hobby have grown and hope that I can do that too.
“Naturally, I had more orders around Christmas time and have some quieter periods which allows me time to plan. I feel so grateful for the support that I’ve had so far.”
A Benyon Estate tenant, Mona enjoys living in De Beauvoir Town. In the future, she hopes to be able to open her own studio. “I’m excited to see where it goes for now, but it would be amazing to one day have my own studio and be my own boss!”
