Architecture and Design
Douglas Architects
Douglas Architects specialises in the extension, renovation, and design of residential properties, particularly in the North and East London area.
Owned and operated by Craig Douglas, his work also includes furniture design for the spaces that he is working on, such as built-in benches or storage that forms part of the room’s structure and design.
“I work mainly on the extension or redevelopment of residential properties and the redesign of interiors,” Craig explained. “This includes listed buildings, as there are so many in the area, which require particular consideration and specialist skills.”
Craig studied architecture at the University of Liverpool and the University of the Creative Arts in Canterbury. He worked for architecture practices in Dusseldorf and Berlin, as well as spending three years practicing in Ireland.
He returned to London in 1999 where he worked in-house for an international architecture firm.
With over 25 years’ experience under his belt, he set up Douglas Architects in 2013, and has been based from De Beauvoir Town since launching the company and works on projects predominantly in the area.
“Wherever possible, I like my work to be within cycling distance of the studio, so I work mainly in Hackney, Islington, Camden and Haringey.

“Throughout my career, it’s always been important to me to have that cyclable commute. I feel so lucky when I cycle home each day through De Beauvoir, it’s an important part of my day.”
Previously operating from 100 De Beauvoir Road, Craig, along with a number of other tenant businesses, moved down the road to De Beauvoir Workshops on Southgate Road when number 100 was redeveloped.
“I was so pleased to be able to stay in De Beauvoir, I couldn’t believe how close it was,” Craig said. “It’s a fantastic place to work.”
Craig works predominantly on his own, occasionally employing the use of architectural technicians or specialists for specific projects.
“As someone who mainly works alone, being alongside other people in the studios is really important. I think everyone benefits from having others around them, people to talk to and sometimes even just to have that background noise and being in a lively place.
“It’s a brilliant space, a really productive environment, and I enjoy sitting out in the courtyard and discussing ideas.”
