We’re delighted to see Albers Café welcoming hungry customers to a new location on the corner of De Beauvoir and Englefield Road, adding to their site in De Beauvoir Block which has been feeding tenants and members since 2019.

Albers, run by Scott Pattinson, has built a reputation for friendly hospitality and great food. And when The Benyon Estate offered him an opportunity to expand into new premises to serve the wider community, we’re delighted that he jumped at the chance.

With the help of a new friend and customer Luke MacMahon, a furniture designer based in De Beauvoir, the duo has created a welcoming new space that has already attracted regular customers. The café is named Albers, after Scott’s Jack Russell terrier.

Offering what Scott calls ‘unfussy, humble food’ on an ever-changing menu in a comfortable, and friendly environment, Albers is clearly destined to become a key part of our community.

The ham, egg and chips, cheese on toast with pickled walnuts, and charred beans with peas, pecorino and baby butterhead salad are already firm favourites with a growing group of diners at lunchtime, including Edward and Jennifer Benyon who have highly praised the food and the atmosphere of their new local haunt.

A switch to bistro-style dining in the evening sees the menu shift up a gear with dishes like marinated aubergine, pollock with white beans and lamb courgettes and potatoes.

Scott said he spoke to Luke about designing a new interior for the café and quickly discovered the two of them shared a vision of what the space could look like.

“Together we have built a concept that somewhat romanticises cafe cultures of the past, while remaining present, but ultimately, we want it to feel like it’s always been there, and you have always been welcome.

“Although we have only just opened, we have been lucky enough to find a brilliant team who not only understand our vision but bring more than we could have ever imagined in experience, creativity and care”, Scott said.

Luke, who used to live in a house opposite the new café, praised the location and the neighbourhood and was delighted to work up the concept with Scott.  “With such a good location and neighbourhood it didn’t take much to imagine what it could be,” he said.

His recommendation?  “Try the ham, egg and chips.”
