SkandiHus back at The Block
A former corporate lawyer, who launched a business running pottery classes in De Beauvoir after a dramatic life-changing awakening, has opened up again in The Block following the extensive refurbishment of the building.
Stine Dulong says getting back to The Benyon Estate is like “coming home.” She started the pottery business, SkandiHus, in 2017 but, along with other commercial tenants, had to move out when major building work got underway in January 2024.
Now, with the refurbishment completed, she’s back, with two adjoining studios in The Block. In one of them she runs six, eight and 12-week courses for adults who want to learn how to become potters. The other studio can be hired as a private space for shoots, workshops, yoga classes, hen parties, birthdays and other events.
Stine reassessed her stressful life in The City in 2013 after a serious skiing accident left her on crutches for nine months. She quit her job as a lawyer and with time on her hands attended a pottery class. She says handling clay for the first time was “love at first touch!”
What started as a passion became a way of life and she now operates with a team of 36 people across three sites in North East London, building a popular business providing classes for adults who want to learn the craft.
Stine is a highly accomplished potter in her own right, establishing a reputation for making high quality tableware which she sells to top hotels and restaurants. Her customers include TV chef Nigella Lawson, food writer Anna Jones and restaurant owner and broadcaster Tom Kerridge
Stine’s tableware, inspired by a love of Scandinavian design, can be found at hotels and restaurants including The Connaught Hotel, Tom Kerridge’s fine dining pub, Hand and Flowers, and high-end restaurant chain Nobu.
She says working as a potter and pottery teacher is so rewarding and the results can be life-changing. “I have students that have told me they were suicidal before they came to classes and we literally saved their lives. It’s very humbling,” she says.
All her teachers are successful potters. “If you are not living and breathing clay and it’s not your greatest passion, you can’t be a great teacher,” she says. “At SkandiHus we all have a passion for sharing what we love - and I think this is what sets us apart from other studios.”
At the Benyon Estate we are delighted to welcome SkandiHus back to a beautiful and practical building after extensive improvements that provide the perfect space for her business.
Our Head of Commercial Property, Josh Summers, says: “We are so happy to have our valued commercial tenants back at The Block and thank them for their patience during the refurbishment. SkandiHus is a terrific business that really adds to the variety of commercial tenants that we are so pleased to host here at The Benyon Estate.”
