The Benyon Estate is supporting a campaign to help remove planning barriers for the creation of new clean energy in urban areas. As a result of this there is a trial taking place on the yard at the rear of 62 and 64 Southgate Rd. This includes the erection of a wind turbine which has been affectionately called Gusty for approximately one week. The organisers of which have written the following:

Britain Remade – a campaign to remove the planning barriers that are blocking new clean infrastructure – and Octopus Energy are teaming up to show just how easy it is to build the clean energy we need to tackle climate change and cut energy bills. With the help of The Benyon Estate, our plan is to build a wind turbine, host a party for green business leaders, and Britain Remade Supporters using the electricity generated from the turbine, and then take the turbine down – all within the space of two weeks. The 28-metre-tall clean energy generator will provide the power for a free evening event with hot food, cold drinks, and good music – as well as speeches from Britain Remade CEO Sam Richards, Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson, and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband. The turbine will then promptly be taken down – with the site left as if nothing had happened. The event will show that we have the technology we need to tackle climate change and cut energy bills - we just need to remove the planning barriers that are currently making it too hard to build new clean energy.

The proposed timescales are as follows:

  • Logistics team to be onsite during the week of 21st Oct for groundworks
  • Gusty is installed on 30th / 31st Oct [filming takes place]
  • Gusty gathers and stores energy between 31st Oct – 4th Nov
  • Vendors arrive and set up – 1st /3rd/4th Nov
  • Event takes place – 4th Nov
  • Pack down begins – 5th Nov
  • Pack down continues potentially 6th / 7th Nov
  • Site is empty by 11th Nov

These timescales may change slightly but not by much.
