63 Sun Studio reopens in De Beauvoir Block
Clients are returning to a suite of unique photographic studios at the Block now that major refurbishment work on the building, carried out by the Benyon Estate, is complete.
63 Sun Studio provides exceptional spaces for commercial photographers and their models, with two large studios filled with natural light, suitable for a wide range of subject matter, including fashion, portrait, lifestyle, and commercial shoots.
Owner and Director Georgia Kuhn had to stop trading while the refurbishment work was underway because there are no alternative studios nearby that she could use. But now she is back, clients are returning and new business is being generated.
Georgia says: “I have been looking at the stats and 58% of our current clients are those that have returned while 42% are new.”
63 Sun Studio opened at 90 De Beauvoir Road in 2011 and has provided photographic studio space for a long list of clients over the years, from major retail brands like Marks and Spencer and Next to publications including Vogue, Rolling Stone and The Guardian.
Georgia says the location of her studios, between the creative East and North London centres of Dalston and Islington, is one reason for its success.
The beautiful and historic streets of De Beauvoir Town, surrounding De Beauvoir Block and 90 De Beauvoir Road, also offer opportunities for photography, away from the studio. Classic London backdrops with beautiful late Georgian houses and tree lined streets can be used by clients.
63 Sun Studio is one of a large number of creative businesses in the Block which thrives on the buzz of like-minded people sharing a building, each with their own niche and with the use of the Block Café and courtyard.
The studios themselves provide photographers and creative directors with the perfect setting for their work. “There are not many other studios that have got large skylights so near to the ground,” Georgia says.
“Our ceiling heights are 3m and the apex of the skylight is approximately 4.5m from the ground.” That, she says, is the perfect height to allow natural light to flood into the studio. Blackout blinds are also available for when alternative light sources are needed to give more control.
Georgia paid tribute to the Benyon Estate team who allowed her to specify modifications to the studio space to make it even more appealing to her clients, with the building of partial height walls to screen off part of the space.
Our Head of Commercial Property, Josh Summers, says: “We know that for some of our specialist tenants, like 63 Sun Studio, leaving their workspaces for these essential refurbishments to be completed meant they had to pause trading. It was important for us to welcome them back as soon as was possible, knowing how greatly they contribute to our community.”
